Hello everyone,

Edward Christian Frederick Nicolay D.S.O RN, Captain of HMS submarine Perseus was my third cousin, twice removed.  His Great (x3) Grandfather  Lieutenent-Colonel Thomas Frederick Nicolay was my Great (x4) Grandfather.

I am currently wading into my family's history and (I hope) to continue to find interesting information, as seems to be happening fairly frequently now.  Although I have yet to delve into the life of Edward Nicolay.

If anyone would like to receive any information regarding HMS submarine Perseus or Captain Nicolay if I come across anything, then please let me know.

Very Best wishes,

Stephen Nicolay

Hello Stephen,

I am currently writing a small book about HMS/M Perseus and would be grateful for any information relating to your relative and the Perseus.

I have looked up the Nicolay family on the internet and it is very extensive and covers several countries, so good luck!

I will send you a 'PM' through this site, with my e.mail details.

Look forward to hearing fom you.

Thank you Victor, yes, Leading Seaman LH Symonds was on the crew list. I am still trying to find information or pictures of the crew marching through Stafford, having been given the Freedon of the town, prior to them sailing to the China Seas.

So if any of your relations recollect this or any other information about the submarine etc., I'd be very grateful.

My uncle, my mother's brother, Gordon Dobson was unlucky enough to have been onboard Perseus when it was sunk. I say unlucky as my uncle normally served on surface ships and was not a submariner and had only just arrived in Malta shortly before Perseus was due to go on patrol. I believe he had arrived in Malta on a destroyer. The story goes that Perseus were short of a crew member, I believe a sonar operator, although I am not 100% sure of this. Anyway, my uncle, not sure if he volunteered or not, was the rating who filled the vacancy. John Stokes apparently visited my grandmother after the war which all my family appreciated. My mother who is 91 still talks a lot about her brother and I am sure that if there is any information out there that fill the gaps in our knowledge I would really appreciate it and I am sure would make an elderly lady very happy. Many thanks for responding. It would be lovely to hear anything about my uncle. Was your uncle on board when Perseus hit the mine. Grateful for any info your dad might have about your uncle and Perseus. I was in Muscat recently. There is a small island about half a mile offshore. The island is covered in names of ships, mostly British, which visited Muscat. I was very surprised to see Perseus was written on the rocks with a White Ensign printed alongside. Regards

Hi there

I am researching my husband's family history and, in particular, his Uncle, Thomas Hull who was an Artificer Stoker on board Perseus when it went down. His widow re-married, was then widowed again, but is happy to pass on any information she has. However, we would also like any information you may have. In particular, we are anxious to buy copies of any books about the Perseus and also John Capes's escape. Knowing that he tried to help stokers, we wonder if Thomas Hull may have been one of those helped to escape, even though he didn't survive.

Any information at all that you have would be most gratefully received.

Kind regards and thanks in advance
